THE FIRST RECORDED COLLECTION OF BRAZILIAN DANCE NOTATIONS For nearly a century, dance notation systems have been used to preserve and teach choreography. But Brazilian dances — despite their cultural relevance — were never part of these systems. Born in popular and collective contexts, they were passed down through practice, not documentation, This absence meant more than a lack of recognition. It meant these dances could not be taught, archived, or transmitted across generations and institutions. Bradesco, one of the leading private investors in Brazilian culture, created Dancebook Brasil. Using Benesh notation, a historical system that has been applied exclusively to classical dances traditionally associated with “high culture,” such as ballet. The challenge was not only technical, but cultural: to translate living, often improvised movements into a structured language without losing their identity. ‘A team of choreographers, dancers, and Benesh specialists broke down each rhythm into sequences, patterns, and Positions — turning movement into a readable system. The result is a book that allows Brazilian dances to be studied, reproduced, and preserved within the same frameworks used by the world's most recognized dance traditions — a book that is already accepted by leading institutions such as the Royal Academy of Dance in London. More than a technical publication, the project preserves, elevates, and expands Brazilian culture, positioning its expressions alongside the world's most established dance repertoires Dancebook Brasil was designed as a Unified system where every element translates movement into structure. The five-line logic of Benesh notation — used to map the human body in notations — became the Foundation of the editorial design. This structure organizes text, images, and notation into a consistent spatial rhythm, making the pages themselves feel in motion. The photography operates as a technical layer, capturing each step with precision so movements can be read, analyzed, and reconstructed. Copywriting guides execution, provides cultural context, and conveys the intention behind each movement — translating a complex and uniquely Brazilian expression into a language that can be understood globally.
