Case Study Details

Heineken - Rooftop Revival (Case Study) | Campaign 1. Background & Challenge Seoul is one of the world's most densely populated urban centers, sustaining a population density that squeezes out meaningful public gathering areas and makes domestic hosting nearly impossible. Conversely, the city possesses a massive, underutilized spatial resource: a vast network of flat, accessible rooftops coated in an affordable, green polyurethane waterproof paint. For Heineken, a global brand structurally anchored in fostering social connection, this urban constraint presented a distinct B2C marketing challenge. The company needed to create an authentic, locally relevant experiential campaign that would transform these forgotten, industrial green spaces into vibrant hubs for social interaction. 2. Creative Idea & Strategy The strategy addressed the modern urban "proximity paradox"—where dense physical proximity often exacerbates social isolation—by repurposing existing metropolitan infrastructure. Driven by the concept "Rooftop Revival," Heineken modernized the pyeong sang, a traditional Korean wooden social platform, equipping it with integrated coolers and speakers under the brand's iconic red star parasol. By superimposing the red star over Seoul's ubiquitous green rooftops, the strategic framework created an organic, subliminal visual signature that seamlessly integrated the brand into the city's architectural identity without relying on forced commercial messaging. 3. Execution The execution blended high-production visual storytelling with physical community placement, utilizing a medium-format camera mounted on a heavy-lift drone to capture striking, high-resolution aerial photography of the urban transformation. These dramatic perspectives were scaled across high-impact Out-of-Home (OOH) billboards, serving as public invitations to exclusive rooftop gatherings hosted by hyper-relevant cultural figures like K-pop star Dino and chef Cho Seo-hyung. To ensure long-term behavioral change, Heineken distributed custom pyeong sang units directly to residents, converting empty corporate-painted roofs into active physical touchpoints. 4. Results & Impact The localized structural intervention achieved immense global and domestic efficiency, generating 421 million impressions across 118 countries. Domestically, the activation sparked immediate behavioral change and optimized long-term consumer equity, driving over 10,000 digital signups from Seoul residents eager to reclaim their rooftops. By successfully merging historical Korean social customs with modern experiential marketing, Heineken surpassed traditional advertising formulas, permanently positioning its brand as a tangible catalyst for urban socialization and community building.
