Case Study Details
Telstra - The Girl & Ghost (Case Study) | Campaign
1. Background & Challenge
Christmas represents the most critical retail and trading period of the year for Telstra, Australia’s largest and most recognized mobile network. Having achieved record-breaking commercial success the previous year through a brand-led demand-generation strategy, Telstra needed to maintain its market momentum. The B2C challenge was to deliver a highly resonant festive campaign that would cultivate deep emotional equity and brand love among Australians, cutting through a cluttered holiday media landscape where competing brands aggressively vying for market share typically employ identical marketing playbooks.
2. Creative Idea & Strategy
The campaign's strategy was built on a deliberate rejection of traditional, cliché holiday tropes that depict idealized families and flawless celebrations, which often fail to reflect modern, diverse Australian society. Instead of relying on generic festive nostalgia, Telstra pivoted toward an imaginative narrative centered on the universal human truth that the season is simply about finding and connecting with your people. By aligning this message with Telstra’s core purpose as a network that enables connectivity and human possibility, the brand established a highly inclusive, culturally relevant positioning.
3. Execution
The execution relied on an innovative, high-craft hybrid animation style that blended the tactile, step-motion charm of puppetry with the fluid capabilities of a 3D digital world. Production began with a full live-action blueprint directed by Steve Rogers to establish realistic pacing and lighting parameters before transitioning to animation. To achieve cinematic realism, world-class Directors of Photography treated digital sets as physical locations, implementing precise lens choices, imperfect costume stitching, and authentic textures inspired by real residents of Queensland to ground the narrative in human authenticity.
