1. Background
Thailand faces a recurring environmental crisis driven by post-harvest agricultural burning. Biomass fires account for 57.9% of national PM2.5 emissions, with rice-field burning as a major contributor during peak season. Each year, vast areas of farmland are intentionally set on fire to clear crop residue quickly and at minimal cost.
The practice releases fine particulate matter, greenhouse gases, and black carbon into the atmosphere, contributing not only to hazardous air quality but also to regional climate impact. At ground level, repeated burning degrades soil structure, reduces organic matter, and weakens long-term agricultural resilience.
Despite government bans, the cycle persists because burning remains the fastest and most affordable method for farmers operating within tight planting windows and economic constraints.
The challenge was not simply to reduce emissions — but to eliminate one of the country’s largest pollution sources without disrupting farmer livelihoods or food production systems.
2. Creative Idea
If fire was the best and fastest way to clear fields, we had to make nature better — and even faster.
FERTILIZER 2.5 was created to replace agricultural burning with accelerated biological decomposition. Instead of allowing crop residue to become airborne pollution, we transformed it into a regenerative resource.
The idea was to intervene at the ecological source — converting waste into nutrient-rich organic matter through a microbial solution that works within days. By outperforming burning in speed and cost, the solution removed the need for combustion entirely.
Rather than mitigating pollution after it spreads, FERTILIZER 2.5 prevents emissions before they occur — shifting farming from a cycle of extraction and combustion to one of regeneration.
We didn’t ask farmers to stop burning.
We made burning unnecessary.
