ActionAid - I'll Marry When I Want (Case Study) | Campaign
1. Background & Challenge: Child marriage remains a severe, often ignored human rights violation, affecting over 640 million women and girls globally. International organization ActionAid tasked the creative team with breaking the silence surrounding this form of gender-based violence. The challenge was to drive donor support for their integrated, education-first approach to female empowerment, creating a global call to action that gives young girls the agency to choose their own futures.
2. Creative Idea & Strategy: Rejecting the typical pity-driven and tear-jerking tropes of charity advertising, the campaign adopted a bold, empowering strategy centered on a real poem titled "I’ll Marry When I Want" by Eileen Piri, a 13-year-old child marriage survivor from Malawi. Rather than portraying girls as passive victims, the creative concept showcases them as strong, independent forces of nature. The film captures girls engaging in chaotic, joyful acts of childlike destruction aimed directly at traditional symbols of marriage, subverting an imposed order through pure energy and rebellion.
3. Execution: Shot on location in Namutumba, Uganda, featuring real students from Buwongo Primary School, the execution fuses poetic, high-energy cinematography with a powerful message of emancipation. The raw, acapella reading of the poem is supercharged by the rebellious soundtrack "Selfish Soul" by Sudan Archives, which perfectly scores the film’s balance of innocence and strength. By grounding the production in an authentic African community, the campaign stands out as a cinematic manifesto of freedom rather than a standard charity plea.
