Saudia - The Coolest Ihram (Case Study) | Campaign
1. Background
As Saudi Arabia’s national carrier, Saudia launched its "Welcome to Our Future" positioning to merge traditional Arabian hospitality with modern innovation. This brand purpose faced a critical B2C hurdle during the annual Hajj pilgrimage, where over two million Muslims endure extreme physical exertion in temperatures peaking at 51°C. Because heatstroke and dehydration pose severe medical risks during the 60-kilometer trek, Saudia sought a culturally attuned, design-led intervention to extend consumer care beyond air travel and protect pilgrims on the ground.
2. Creative Idea
To protect pilgrims without violating strict religious protocols, Saudia introduced The Coolest Ihram, transforming a centuries-old sacred garment into a high-tech thermal shield. By embedding microscopic cooling technology directly into the textile fibers, the airline created a functional product innovation that lowers skin temperature by 2°C. This breakthrough delivered cooling relief equivalent to three simultaneous fans, completely bypassing the design limitations of traditional sports apparel to protect users while fully respecting ritual compliance.
3. Insights & Strategy
The campaign's strategy capitalised on the insight that the Ihram is an unalterable garment governed by strict religious laws symbolizing purity and equality, meaning any visible modifications or material additions are forbidden. Consequently, the strategic framework focused entirely on invisible innovation woven deep within the textile's core. By hiding the thermal science inside the fabric itself, Saudia maintained the spiritual integrity and appearance of the traditional attire while creating a powerful, self-verifying utility tool.
4. Execution
The product rollout relied on experiential sampling and institutional partnerships rather than conventional advertising, distributing 8,400 cooling garments directly to pilgrims on Saudia flights during the 2025 season. The brand amplified this grass-roots adoption by showcasing the innovation at major industry events like the Arabian Travel Market and the Hajj Expo. This credibility-first approach successfully secured system-level buy-in, prompting the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to officially distribute the branded apparel through its centralized booking platform.
5. Results
The purpose-driven activation achieved exceptional institutional and commercial efficiency, generating over 100 million organic media impressions and driving a 20% uplift in positive brand sentiment. The initiative achieved a 100% user satisfaction rate across 14,000 distributed units and earned historic compliance endorsements from leading Islamic authorities. By successfully merging public health with religious heritage, Saudia established an entirely new product category, unlocking an estimated $700+ million annual market.

The Kaaba and the
Pilgrims’ Journey
Bi wsicht
{An average of 2 million pilgrims completo
thir Hajj every year-a sacred pilgrimage to
‘Mecca that every Muslim is required to
complete at least once during their lifetime.
Imagine walking up to 60km through the
desert, up and down ahill in an intense crowd
‘over 5 days with temperatures soaring up as.
high as 51°C with 37% humidity,
Tho intensity of Hajj pushes the limits of
human heat tolerance, posing many health
tisks—heatstroke, dehydration, exhaustion,
‘even death (1,300 recorded in Hojj 2024).
Pilgrims face this extrome physical challenge
without any equipment that protects them.
‘against the heat.
HE CHALLENGES 2 OBJECTIVES
Tho challenge was to create a visual identity
for The Coolest thram, a product created to
‘address the extreme heat during Hajj season
without interfering with religious practice,
Tho identity not only needed to convey the
product with clarity, but also connect to
‘our audience of millions of Muslims from
‘around the world, all coming from different
nations and speaking different languages.
Tho aim was to create an identity that
‘expressed an innovative product using
best-in-class cooling technologies, felt
in ine with modern performance wear,
‘and still respected the sacred ritual
1 sOLUTION
Tho visual identity was built from a pilgrim
first foundation: an understanding that Hai
is a sacred journey understood, experienced,
‘ond shared by every Muslim around the
world. At tho centre of it is the Kaaba and its
iconic form recognised by all who have and
stil hope to reach it
The visual system drew directly from the
visual language of Haji. The geometry of the
Kaaba becamo the foundation for the logo,
typography, layout grid, packaging, and
motion principles, ensuring the identity felt
native to the pilgrimage environment rather
than imposed upon it.
Arestrained black-and-white palette
reflected tho visual landscape of Hajj, while
‘a subtle heat-map gradient provided a
universal, non-verbal signal of cooling, This
cllowed the innovation to be undlorstood,
instantly across cultures and literacy levels,
without disrupting ritual or symbolism,
Just as the innovation itself doos.
Ultimately, the identity is about more than
tho product. It's about the whole pilgrim’s
journey and the beneficial role The Coolest
Thram plays every stop of the way.
